EMILY: Hi everyone, welcome to our podcast. I'm your host Emily, and today we're discussing an exciting new course that's changing the way we think about manufacturing and sustainability. Joining me is Richard, an expert in lean manufacturing and one of the key faculty members for our Undergraduate Certificate in Reducing Carbon Footprint through Lean Manufacturing. Welcome to the show, Richard. RICHARD: Thanks, Emily, great to be here. I'm really excited to share more about this innovative program. EMILY: So, let's dive right in. Can you tell us a bit more about the course and what students can expect to learn? RICHARD: Absolutely. The Undergraduate Certificate in Reducing Carbon Footprint through Lean Manufacturing is designed to equip students with the skills to minimize waste, optimize resources, and maximize efficiency in manufacturing processes. We're not just talking about reducing waste; we're talking about creating a more sustainable future. EMILY: That sounds amazing. I know that many of our listeners are interested in sustainability, but they might not know how to apply it in a practical way. Can you give us some examples of how the concepts learned in this course can be applied in real-world scenarios? RICHARD: One of the key aspects of the course is our focus on industry-led curriculum and real-world case studies. We work with companies to develop scenarios that are relevant to their operations, and students get to work on solving those problems. For example, we might have a company that's struggling with high energy consumption, and students would work together to identify areas for improvement and develop a plan to reduce that consumption. EMILY: That's really hands-on and practical. I'm sure our listeners are curious about the career opportunities available to graduates of this course. Can you tell us a bit more about that? RICHARD: Graduates of this course can pursue a wide range of roles, from quality management to operations management to sustainability consulting. The skills they develop in problem-solving, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement are highly valued by employers, and we've seen many of our graduates go on to successful careers in these fields. EMILY: That's fantastic. I know that many of our listeners are interested in making a positive impact on the environment, but they might not know how to get started. What advice would you give to someone who's interested in pursuing a career in sustainability? RICHARD: My advice would be to start by educating yourself. Take courses like this one, read books, attend conferences, and network with people in the field. And don't be afraid to get your hands dirty – volunteer, intern, or take on a project that aligns with your values. The most important thing is to take that first step and start making a difference. EMILY: Thanks, Richard, that's really inspiring. Before we go, is there anything else you'd like to add about the course or the
